Pasadena's Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel & Spa

I had the privilege to enjoy a wonderful weekend get-away that was only a short
car ride from my neighborhood. For many of us in our busy lives we so
desperately need a little break but don't want to take the time, pay for airfare
or go too far from home. I have the perfect solution for those who want some
quality time as a couple or a special family vacation. A celebration of life!
The grand elegance of the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena is
really just around the corner.
My day started at 10:00 a.m. with a "Get Cooking with The Ritz-Carlton Chefs"
package. I was escorted into the kitchen with 10 others, and each of us had our
own apron, chopping board, recipes and set of knives. For our morning munchies
we enjoyed complimentary pastries, coffee, and mimosas! What a way to start the
day. For 3 hours we were lead by the Chef de Cuisine that included hands-on
cooking followed by our three-course meal that we just created pared with wines
selected by the Maitre'D. I felt that the instruction was so valuable not only
on the specific menu but general food preparation, the right cookware, and all
those wonderful tricks of the trade!
For children ages 7-12, they can become "Pastry Chef for the Day" and explore
the culinary world in the hotel's pastry kitchen. The packages must be booked in
advance and are very popular. These classes are offered through the end of the
year. And the menus change every month. You can buy a series of classes if you
wish.
The rooms are well appointed with twice-daily maid service, 24-hour room
service, safe deposit box, marble baths, plush terry robes (which I lived in)
and complete concierge service. I recommend the first floor with a lovely large
outdoor patio.
That afternoon I enjoyed a dip in the pool which was busy with couples and
families alike- with food and bar service available poolside. Afternoon tea is
served every Saturday and Sunday as well as their famous Sunday Champagne
brunch. Fine Dining is also available for that special occasion in The Grill.
Reservations required for all restaurants.
You may choose to drive into Old Pasadena where the restaurant selection is
fantastic as well as some of your favorite stores for great shopping. The
Huntington Library, four nearby Golf Courses, Tennis, Bike rentals, The Norton
Simon Museum, The Gamble House, and the famous Pasadena Playhouse are just a few
of the choices to complete your special weekend. Upon your return in the evening
you can enjoy the best of Rhythm and Blues every Saturday night in The Bar. Free
admission. Two shows; 9:30 and 10:45pm.
Now onto my favorite hang-out! The Huntington Ritz-Carlton has a World-Class
Spa. Complete with a nice selection of Yoga, Step, Jazz, and Aerobics classes
throughout the day. You may hire one of their personal trainers for a work-out
in the state-of-the-art 1,440 square foot fitness facility. The spa's
personalized programs range from a combination of a la carte spa services to
daily spa packages. Treatments, tailored for both men and women, include
massage, facials, body exfoliation, body wraps. Thirty different treatments in
all.
I enjoyed a wonderful relaxing Swedish massage and I was able to steam, Jacuzzi
and shower in the privacy of the women's locker room. The staff was friendly,
knowledgeable and I truly felt like I was far away somewhere on vacation. So,
don't bother packing a large suitcase! Just take a short ride to The
Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena with an over-night bag and be
prepared to enjoy yourself with all the activities listed above.
