A Most Spectacular Train Trip
by Plaza Travel Consultant, Sandra Sparks
Sep 28-Oct. 1, I journeyed with a few of my fellow Plaza consultants from
Calgary to Vancouver – through the Canadian Rockies aboard Rocky Mountaineer
Railtours. Flew Alaska Airlines from Los Angeles to Calgary, and from Vancouver
to Los Angeles, both directions in coach class, just under 3 hours travel each
way. Service was friendly and smooth. Clearing customs was quick and painless,
with customs agents that actually had a great sense of humor. This is worth
mentioning, as it is not the usual norm! This impromptu trip was decided on spur
of the moment. Thrilled with everlasting beautiful memories, created on such
short getaway - it felt more like a week trip rather then three nights. The
rugged terrain revealed a myriad of scenic wonders around every bend.
Magnificent scenery balanced with traditional high standard of comfort and warm
service on roomy reclining seats and air-conditioned coaches.
We experienced Red Leaf Service onboard the train as well as Gold Leaf Service.
The Red Leaf Service was very nice, but, I highly recommend upgrading to the
Dome Coach (Gold Leaf Service) for the panoramic view. You’ll experience an
extra measure of luxury, including gourmet dining and assigned seating on the
top level.
The Sheraton Wall Center Hotel in Vancouver is huge and beautiful. More like a
convention hotel, definitely a business hotel. The accommodations here are very
spacious and service was impeccable. We had breakfast at the Sutton Place down
the street from this previous hotel, and it was a more traditional decor with an
intimate feel to it. The Sutton Place has long-term stay and the public areas as
well as the rooms were beautiful. What I liked at The Sutton Place is that there
is no extra cost for use of the entertainment health club.
