Tips for Traveling With Your Pets

By Heather Hopkins Clement

Pet ownership in the US has grown steadily in the past few decades and even more so in the past year. Adoption rates for pets increased dramatically in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic as people spent more time at home.

As travel begins to open up again, more people are seeking out pet-friendly options to include their furry friends–now treasured family members–on vacation. While pet-friendly options are increasing, some advanced planning is necessary to ensure a smooth trip, and there are a number of considerations: quarantine regulations (if relevant), transportation options, accommodation policies and fees, and how pet-friendly other places (such as restaurants) are at your planned destination.

Start planning early, so that you can meet necessary timelines and budget time and money accordingly. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what you can and cannot do with your pet once you arrive at your destination, not just where you’ll be staying, but also at other places you plan to spend time such as restaurants, sightseeing, public spaces, etc. If you plan to visit places where pets are not allowed, confirm the availability and fees of a pet-sitter, if needed. (Most hotels will not allow you to leave your pet alone unattended in the room).

Hotels’ pet policies can vary widely, so you really need to confirm the relevant rules and fees in advance regarding any deposit, cleaning fees, pet amenities, services provided, etc. Room location is also important as you don’t want to have to walk far to let your pet take care of business. Some properties really roll out the red carpet offering a room-service and spa menu for pets.

Traveling with your pets is very “doable”, and nothing is more rewarding than seeing the “smiles” on their faces as they enjoy being with you in a new place. Working with a travel advisor to do all the necessary research and planning will ensure you have a wonderful time making memories with your furry friends wherever you choose to visit.

Heather’s dogs Wally & Teddy loved being able to go outside directly from the room to the patio and garden area at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa At Gainey Ranch.

Wally enjoyed being able to sun on the patio, while attached to his long line, and then coming in to cool down in the room at Mountain Shadows Resort Scottsdale.

Heather's dogs Calvin and Lillye (now deceased) loved going to Santa Barbara where they could ride strapped into a surrey or take a walk off-leash at the Douglas Family Preserve and nearby doggie beach, and there are some great pet-friendly accommodations in the area.
