Our Top 3 Reasons to Buy Travel Insurance

By Alyssa Nelson, Marketing Specialist, Plaza Travel

Let’s face it, insurance isn’t a topic most of us want to talk about. Whether its health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, etc. – whatever it may be, it’s not typically something we get excited about. However as the world begins opening to travel again, travel insurance is now more important than ever. We want you to have the best experience possible, even if sometimes that unfortunately means cancelling a trip. Having travel insurance can protect you in many ways, some you might not be aware of.

1. You never know what’s going to happen.
This may seem obvious, but life is unpredictable. One of the most common responses we hear when we offer travel insurance is, “No, thank you. We are DEFINITELY going on our trip!” And we love the enthusiasm! But sometimes things come up and you’re forced to cancel a trip you were really looking forward to. When you’re already bummed about missing out on a long-awaited vacation, the last thing you want to hear is that you can’t be refunded. Often times travel insurance will cover trip cancellation, whether you or a loved one get sick or break a bone, often times you can get most (if not all) of your money back.

2. Your trip could get interrupted unexpectedly.
Let’s say you’re on your way to Europe for two weeks and you have a layover in New York, but when you land in NYC the airline announces your next flight is delayed due to mechanical issues. Depending how long it takes, you might have to get a hotel room for the night. You’ll definitely need to get food. Because these are unexpected trip-related costs, often times travel insurance will cover those costs so you can focus on taking care of your needs and not have to worry about how much extra you’re spending on your trip.

3. Medical emergencies and natural disasters abroad can be extremely expensive.
If you don’t have travel insurance, medical emergencies, bad weather and natural disasters can cost a fortune. Many international countries do not accept our health insurance policies, meaning if something were to happen you would have to pay out-of-pocket. Let’s say for some reason you needed medical evacuation and had to be flown to a hospital, costing you thousands of dollars. Or you had to cancel your Caribbean cruise due to a hurricane. Travel insurance will usually cover these types of costs.

Whether you lose some luggage, your child gets sick, or a flight is cancelled, travel insurance is a great way to protect your investment. Your Travel Advisor can help you find the best travel insurance plan to fit your trip and your needs. At the end of the day, it’s a small price to pay to not lose a lot of money.
