Iceland : The Land of Fire and Ice

Iceland has recently become the new hot, popular
spot to travel. With just over 300,000 people in the
country, they host more than 2 million visitors
each year. English is widely spoken, making it a
great destination for those of us living in the US.
Many people visit Iceland's ports of call via cruise
ship, while others opt for organized or private land
tours. My family and I visited in the summer and
during our entire time in Iceland, it never got dark!
The term "night" really only referred to a time of day.

We enjoyed some great meals (the food is wonderful, but not cheap), drove through beautiful areas, and
met extremely nice people.

In no particular order, here are some of the amazing things to do in Iceland:

Visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa (you need a reservation)
Hike a glacier in cramp-ons - walk into caverns, drink melting glacier water, and learn about the history of glaciers in Iceland
Drive on a glacier to the entrance of an Ice Cave and explore the cave for an hour
Hike the beautiful mountains, with amazing views of the countryside and a scenic overview of a glacier
Visit numerous waterfalls - each more beautiful than the last
Whale watching on a Zodiac boat
Explore sea caves at an off shore island in a Zodiac
Visit the memorial museum of Eldfell volcano (it erupted about 40 years ago)
Snowmobiling on a glacier
Watch a geyser erupt
Visit the Black Sand beach (the last Star Wars movie was filmed there)
Visit Diamond Beach where icebergs floating from a glacial lagoon float onto the beach and remind you of diamonds (really big diamonds)
Take a Zodiac through the icebergs in Glacier Lagoon
Snorkel between the continental plates of North America and Europe. You will wear dry suits to keep you warm and dry. The water temperature is in the low 30s (no, you couldn't feel the cold that much) and the water was crystal clear.

I would highly recommend Iceland as one of the top destinations on your bucket list.
