Five Amazing Places to Travel This Winter

By Julie Cohn of Luxe Journeys Travel, an independent affiliate of Plaza Travel

Whether you are looking for a beach vacation to escape the chilly temperatures or a ski vacation to make the most of the snow, winter is a great time of year to travel. Need a little travel inspiration to plan your next trip? Here are six amazing places to travel this winter, with ideas for both warm and cold weather destinations to satisfy any wanderlust!

Banff/Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Lake Louise

Located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, the Banff/Lake Louise area is known for its breathtaking mountain, glacier, and lake views. Nearby Mt. Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise ski areas are a favorite for skiers, but there are plenty of outdoor activities for non-skiers, including snowshoeing, ice skating, horse-drawn sled rides, dog sledding, and snowmobiling. Those who prefer the indoors can still enjoy gorgeous mountain views while snuggling by a roaring fire or take in the spectacular glacier views while sipping afternoon tea.

Kauai, Hawaii

Hawaii is a favorite winter destination for travelers, but especially Kauai, known for its lush natural beauty, and temperate winter climate. Less crowded than the other islands, the jagged coastline, stunning waterfalls, and white-sand beaches add a sense of adventure to the untamed landscape, making Kauai an experience of a lifetime.

Venice, Italy
Venice, Italy

Each year, Venice hosts Carnevale di Venezia, an annual two-week festival to mark the beginning of Lent. More sophisticated than New Orleans Mardi Gras, the Venice Carnival is known for its exotic gold-adorned porcelain masks, elaborate costumes, masquerade balls and public parades. While visiting, be sure to visit the many historical landmarks, such as Doge’s Palace or St Marks Basilica, or take a romantic gondola ride on the grand canal.

The Bahamas

Sunny sand beaches, tropical ocean breezes, and sultry water temperatures make The Bahamas the perfect place to escape the cold of winter. A popular destination for honeymooners, it is also a favorite for multi-generational families. Popular activities include beach time on the fabulous white or pink sand beaches, golf, snorkeling, sailing, cave diving, and of course swimming with the famous Exuma pigs.

Iceland

If seeing the Northern Lights makes the top of your travel wish list for 2020, Iceland is the place to be! Pingvellir National Par, east of Reykjavik, is one of the best places to best catch the swirling magical dancing lights in the night sky. While in Iceland, be sure to visit other iconic destinations such as the glaciers of Snæfellsjökull National Park, Puffin Island, Skaftafall Park, or the hot springs at The Blue Lagoon.

Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Known for its picturesque cobblestone streets and European-style buildings, Quebec City, the oldest city in North America, is a blend of old-world charm and modern conveniences. Quebec City is famous for its winter carnival in early February, with ice castles, nighttime parades, beaver tail pastries, and steaming mugs of Caribou (an alcoholic drink with red wine, whiskey, and maple syrup) as part of the festivities.
